Fall 2020 Workshop Series

Fall Workshop Series

This fall, the Office of Research is offering 5 Zoom workshops designed for faculty who want a refresher in design and data analysis. Beginning researchers, graduate students, and staff are also welcome! We will post individual workshop descriptions soon. Registration will be available via workshops.appstate.edu.

Step One: Developing Your Research Question and Choosing a Design (9/1 @ 2-3pm OR 9/2 @ 10-11am)

In this workshop, we’ll discuss the basics of developing sound research questions, operationalizing your variables, and choosing an appropriate research design. More details here.

Preparing your Data for Analysis: Principles of Database Management and Descriptive Statistics (9/22 @ 2-3 pm OR 9/23 @ 10-11am)

You’ll learn how to structure your database to run your intended statistical tests. Then, we’ll dive into the first step to all quantitative analyses—descriptive statistics. More details here.

The Foundations of Inferential Statistics: Making Sense of the Statistics You Conduct (10/13 @ 2-3pm OR 10/14 @ 10-11am)

Here, we’ll focus on the foundations of frequentist or null hypothesis testing. You’ll brush up on your knowledge about p-values, confidence intervals, and effect sizes. More details here.

Analyzing Your Data, Part I: Conducting Group Comparisons (11/3 @ 2-3pm OR 11/4 @ 10-11am)

Are you comparing a treatment group to a control? Examining for gender differences? We will cover the most common kinds of group comparison tests—t-tests and all the variations of ANOVA, including interaction effects.

Analyzing Your Data, Part II: Conducting Relational Tests (11/17 @ 2-3pm OR 11/18 @ 10-11am)

This workshop focuses on the most common relational tests—correlation and multiple regression. We’ll also introduce you to mediation and moderation.
